I changed the traditional way of drawing flowers at this time , the color and flowers shapes are wired .when i look at my primary research and first hand drawing i feel intranquil. I found that the influence of color on graphics is very powerful, and different colors will have different feelings when combined. Some colors can bring a strong impact to the vision, which can make people quickly remember the appearance of the pattern. Some patterns rely on cool colors to give people a comfortable feeling. This is the charm of color. In this painting, I learned to try to break some rules. For example, I would paint flowers very strange, and the petals would be painted with colors that did not belong to them. I want to find something new by breaking the tradition.Pigments made of different materials give me different tactile and visual effects.

When carrying out two tasks, I made improvement by exploring and trying. At beginning, I just liked to paint in the way that was most comfortable for me and the technique I’m mostly good at. It could see that I use a lot of watercolors in talking color, because I think watercolor can easily fuse different colors, it is a very soft technique. Because of the malleability of water, I can constantly overlay colors. I tried using a combination of crayons and watercolors, but still my images looked mediocre. I think my thought is limited. My paintings are very concrete and realistic, which makes me start to think about how to transfer them into patterns.
At the beginning of talking pattern, due to my limited understanding of printing, I only drew repeating patterns due to my habitual thinking. I extracted elements from daily life and made simple deformation to draw patterns of different sizes and shapes, and drew repeating patterns. I used procreate. For me, the most comfortable part of this app is that it can change the color matching at will. I am always very upset about the color matching, and I am very afraid of making mistakes, so when I draw on the paper, my picture will become more careful. digital drawing, on the other hand, looks well edited, because I keep trying different colors until I’m satisfied. I think this is what I need to improve, I need to be more daring, I am afraid of failure, the image of failure makes me uncomfortable. But if I don’t try, I will never know that there are more possibilities. next time when I draw, I will try to use colors more boldly and freely on paper. I really like the unpredictable texture created by real pigments, which will help me think of more silhouette and patterns when making pattern design, and the colors visible to the naked eye will be more realistic and referable. Next time, I will try more collisions of different media.
Watercolour piece with fineliner and tracing paper. This is another watercolour piece with market and fineliner, it is an abstract piece of pebbles I photographed. This was a one minute primary research drawing of flowers in the Chelsea flower market, I used fineliner, soft pastel, and marker pens. I did this piece using acrylic, watercolour and gouche paint, I experimented using a printing technique including acetate. This was apart of my primary research and I used oil pastels to respond to autumnal leaves. This was a response to Kofi Ansah’s garment which I saw in the Victoria Albert museum.
I used watercolour paints to explore the colours within a sliced lime, over a pastel pink background. A slightly abstract response to a flower market using oil pastels. This is a more detailed watercolour painting of a papaya.A response to graffiti which I photographed on the side of a tube as Shepards bush. This is an abstract painting which reflects an accidental photograph I took of dirt while I was photographing nature. I used watercolour and fineliner to respond to the picture. Abstract acrylic response to tulips
In the process of exploring “Talking color”, I chose DLR line as the theme. At the first time I took the train, I felt surprised by it fresh colour and unique design, this train connect Canary Wharf and the City of London, which would cross some branches of River Thames. As soon as I sat on the coach, I realized it is different from other tube, and it made me thought that it might had relationship with “water” because of its blue decoration. The first thing that attracted me is the glaring and colourful light inside the coach, the bright blue become the main colour and the yellow lights are mixed with it, which created a sense of illusion, it seems like a dreamy train that I watched in “Night on the Galactic Railroad”. Therefore, I used water soluble crayon and water colour to draw the complicated light at the beginning, but I found it is too hazy.Instead of water-soluble crayon, then I used colour pencil and colour pen as one of the main tools to add more details.
Overall, after I finished my drawing, I basically satisfied with the whole visual effect, especially the colour I mixed in this painting, for example, the yellow pencil scripts which on the upside of blue water colour. In addition, the pattern I changed from seats is also one of my favorites, I exaggerated the shape of wave to make it looks more appealing. I also used some yellow and black wavy lines to imitate the vivid views from the outside of windows.
However, I realized what I lacked in this project as well. When I compared my works with other classmates, I found they used so many different tools to show their observation, in comparison, the categories of drawing method I used are monotonous.
Inspired by passionfruit using markers. Technique of combining two different patterns together.Using a black marker and a blue pencil , inspiration from chicken bone.I went to my local junkyard where I took a photo of the mans tattoos who worked there and used different markers to draw from it.inspired by houses and street lamp , using posca pens and markers.Inspiration from a gallery visit to colour scape of the artist James Turell. here using mix media of post pen , blackmarker and crayons.Done with markers on A5, inspired by the graves in Nunhead graveyard. this was a fun experimental process where I trased with a pencil through wood to get texture on the white a4 paper , then I used three different colours to do different patterns . I very much like this one, had a lot of fun doing it.
Butterfly with different patterns that are stuck in my brain , I used a photo of mushrooms to make the tape of the butterfly , completely an accident. using a fine liner .
Reflection,
Starting from the beginning of the project, we were asked to go around London to seek inspiration for both of the tasks and to absorb all the colours around us so we could apply them to our work. My classmates and I were asked to go around Soho/Chinatown area to go and draw from things we saw and to take photos of different things; for example, we explored different shops and restaurants; I was looking at random things like teapots and plates because they had distinctive, beautiful art on them. I also took a bunch of inspiration from things around me, like my home, my furniture, everyday tasks and the people I was with.
In Task 1, I used a lot of mixed media such as acrylic paint, watercolour, markers, fine liner, collaging and pencil; by using all these different techniques, I could demonstrate my ideas differently. During that time, I went to different galleries and exhibitions, like the Colourscape and Saatchi gallery, which was perfect for my research.
Task 2, was the project about seeing a pattern and how we could look at something and make a pattern out of it, it could be very simple to spot a pattern if you really just took a moment to look. During this project, I was still exploring London and looking around to me what I found inspiring. These two tasks were the best way to start my three-year course in textile print, a lovely way to ease myself and get inspired.
A tree on a sunset sky. Ink and Photoshop.I developed my drawing of peeled layers of paint on a gate. I mimicked the cracks by using gouache, tissue paper and a scalpel for scratching. Some marigold flowers at the Horniman Gardens. I decided to experiment with colour and switched red and orange of the original flowers to lilac and purple to cool down the tones. I painted the paper with gouache and watercolour and cut out the shapes. This pattern was inspired by lanterns in China Town on a rainy day when we did our first trip with our Study Group. I used liquid watercolour. I just love this medium for its fluidity and surprising ways colours mix with each other. While at the canteen at LCF, my phone camera accidentally captured this close up of fabric of my jeans. I used masking fluid, ink, acrylics and watercolour. I was quite happy with the effect of the acrylic paint. Another try with acrylics, a roller and a fineliner. I got inspiration for this pattern from looking at a train door button on the tube. I use the tube several times a day yet this little mundane object is so easily overlooked and goes unnoticed. I painted the paper with gouache and the buttons in acrylic with silver and stone effect. Printed with real, wilted roses in gouache and a fineliner.Pattern number 2, developed and edited in Photoshop.A repeat of a fragment of my drawing edited in Photoshop.
