Talking colour – Nell Tobin

Reflection
I took on the task of ‘talking colour’, firstly gathering with my group and began exploring West London to find as many inspirations as we could that included colour in them. I brought multitudes of different supplies such as pens and pencils to demonstrate a wide range of techniques and media. As soon as my group and I arrived to Notting hill (the first location we collaboratively chose), we were immersed in colour everywhere and I immediately started to produce primary research including drawings and taking photographs. This task tested my abilities in a positive way as I tried out many different things that were out of my comfort zone. I was really absorbed and riveted from the environment around me as London has a special place in my heart seeing I have lived here all my life. Viewing it in a different light and being able to look deeper into the buildings allowed me to see their true beauties. Withal, I saw that there was a lot of intricate structures and profusions of colour especially in North London. We were also prompted with visiting North London, I took it upon myself to explore on my own, primarily because I am very familiar with the area, from living there my whole life. I wanted to be able to fully immerse myself into areas previously unbeknownst to me. The vivid colours of the fruits and vegetables that I saw displayed at small food markets in North London inspired my illustrations.

Overall, both Task 1 and Task 2 are very impressive. You have managed to make simple, everyday objects scream with colour and texture. I can see that you have experimented with various techniques using dry mediums. I can tell your strength lies in using oil pastels and mark making. Your rendering skills are shown evidently through all your drawings. For example in Task 1, in the first drawing, the shading from a darker shade of orange to yellow and the background scribbles of green somehow fit in perfectly together. Moving on to the next drawing where you have managed to use a thick oil pastel for the flower still managing to retain the delicateness of the flowers is amazing. In Task 2, the pink flowers is a simple drawing however with repetition, could make a great print. Your drawings show that you have a strong sense of colour combinations. However, I hoped to see more drawings in a combination of wet mediums and dry mediums or solely wet mediums. I feel like it would have made some of your drawings more interesting than they already are. For example, the simple red line drawing in Task 1, I could imagine the red to stand out a lot more with a wash of grey paint in the background or using red paint itself to highlight the shadows. It could also be nice for some drawings in Task 2, to be scanned to enhance the pattern. None the less, I found all your drawings extremely interesting and I feel like you have successfully stuck to the brief.
