A tree on a sunset sky. Ink and Photoshop.I developed my drawing of peeled layers of paint on a gate. I mimicked the cracks by using gouache, tissue paper and a scalpel for scratching. Some marigold flowers at the Horniman Gardens. I decided to experiment with colour and switched red and orange of the original flowers to lilac and purple to cool down the tones. I painted the paper with gouache and watercolour and cut out the shapes. This pattern was inspired by lanterns in China Town on a rainy day when we did our first trip with our Study Group. I used liquid watercolour. I just love this medium for its fluidity and surprising ways colours mix with each other. While at the canteen at LCF, my phone camera accidentally captured this close up of fabric of my jeans. I used masking fluid, ink, acrylics and watercolour. I was quite happy with the effect of the acrylic paint. Another try with acrylics, a roller and a fineliner. I got inspiration for this pattern from looking at a train door button on the tube. I use the tube several times a day yet this little mundane object is so easily overlooked and goes unnoticed. I painted the paper with gouache and the buttons in acrylic with silver and stone effect. Printed with real, wilted roses in gouache and a fineliner.Pattern number 2, developed and edited in Photoshop.A repeat of a fragment of my drawing edited in Photoshop.
Yulia I really enjoyed looking at your uploaded work. Your use of different mediums to produce pieces so distinct from each other is very impressive and shows versatility ranging from traditional representation like the flower portrait to the experimentation of the slashed tissue paper piece.
You have challenged yourself by using different media and giving yourself less time than you would like. This has helped you to create freer pieces, such as the Paddington Basin pastel drawing. The jaunty perspective and use of faded colours make this an engaging image to look at.
The watercolour circles image from your trip to Chinatown stand out. Your command and use of the media and colour use appear professional and can be visualised as a successful print without any further work. The watercolour running you refer to, makes the image unique.
I like the way your work ties together, through the everyday items and encounters in your life and your artistic interpretation of these. Both the painting of the denim captured on your phone and the collage of the train button are things we see but dont’t see and your art brings them into a new focus for the viewer.
You have used collage, photoshop, paints, watercolours and inks with good use of colour. These include brights to muted. Some of your work is complex, some experimental and simple. From your annotation you have described how you have challenged yourself to produce an effective set of images.
